How scrap car values work

Your scrap car's value depends mainly on its weight and current metal rates. Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs) pay for the recyclable materials in your vehicle, and some also value reusable parts.

  1. 1

    Weight

We look up your car's kerb weight for its generation, from a manufacturer or spec source.

  2. 2

    Metal rates

We apply published per-tonne scrap rates from more than one buyer, dated within the last 90 days.

  3. 3

    Buyer averages

Where large buyers publish what they pay on average, we show that too, with the source and month.

Sources often disagree, so we show each figure separately with its source. Read our methodology

Sell my scrap car

Three things to know before you hand over the keys.

Use an authorised treatment facility

Only an ATF can scrap your car. Give them the V5C, keep the yellow slip and tell DVLA. You can be fined up to £1,000 if you don't.

Payment by bank transfer or cheque

In England and Wales, scrap dealers must not pay for scrap metal in cash. Expect a bank transfer or cheque.

Common questions

How do you estimate scrap car value?

We use the car's sourced kerb weight and published per-tonne scrap rates, plus any whole-car averages a buyer has published. Every figure is dated and cited. We never invent a price.

Is the figure an offer?

No. Every result is an estimate, not an offer. We are not a buyer, authorised treatment facility or broker. A real quote depends on the buyer, location, condition and parts demand.

Do I need my registration or postcode?

No. The check uses make, model, year and condition only. We do not store registrations or postcodes.

Who can scrap my car?

Only an authorised treatment facility (ATF). Give them the V5C, keep the yellow slip and tell DVLA. You can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA.

What is a Certificate of Destruction?

The ATF must give you a Certificate of Destruction within 7 days for a car, light van or 3-wheeler. Keep it as proof the vehicle was destroyed.

Can a scrap yard pay me in cash?

In England and Wales, scrap dealers must not pay for scrap metal in cash. Expect a bank transfer or cheque. If the ATF repairs and sells the car instead, other payment methods may be allowed.

Estimate, not an offer. We are not a buyer, ATF or broker. Real quotes depend on the buyer, your location, the car's condition and demand for its parts.
